In the day and age where the music industry is overpopulated with two
opposites: pep rally and suicide provoking songs; there is only, but
one hope that an individual or a group of individuals, who are willing
to betray the mainstream, will emerge from this clone-driven society
that has been engrossed by the pop and emo cultures for far too long.
Thus, we open are arms in welcome to Calibretto, a band who dares to
go past the norm.
Calibretto, formerly known as Calibretto 13 of Tooth and Nail Records,
have ditched their Christian-based past and are now writing about the
insane (i.e. killers and the like). Joseph Whiteford (Acoustic/Electric
Guitars/Vocals), Chris Thomas (Drums/Vocals/Percussion), and Chad Serhal
(Acoustic/Electric Bass Guitars, Vocals) make up the trio from Kokomo,
Indiana, all of whom insist that their new turn of direction portrays
the dark side of life, society and love.
While it is unknown whether or not they were dropped by the label or
left it to begin in a new direction, Calibretto would never have released
anything like their latest EP, Dead By Dawn on Tooth and Nail. If anything,
this mixed blessing will open more doors for this underground trio (now
on Standard Recording Company) who can not just be classified as psychobilly,
ska, or indie rock, but rather a mixture of all those genres and then
some.
Dead By Dawn is brought to life with Calibretto's unique instrumentation
that includes: acoustic and electric guitars, bells, chimes, and even
an organ. Although this may seem as an odd combination, Calibretto doesn't
make any mistakes, but rather they use the instruments in their favor.
Listening to the band's EP may be eerie for some or comical and likable
to others. Just think of a horror movie score with high pitched singing.
It's something new, it's something different, and it's something brilliant.
The band is up for tours throughout the rest of the year, so be sure
to keep updated on the tour dates at their official
website.
Calibretto starts off the EP with "Used to be people who liked
to come see the freaks." Freaks they may be, or just three young
guys who throw a new brand of sound out for hungry music lovers to feed
on.
